ILWU Health Benefits and Chiropractic: What’s Covered and What’s Not

Pinched-Nerve-Treatment-in-Walnut-Cree

If you’re a current ILWU member—or part of the longshore and warehouse community in California—understanding how your health plan works can be confusing, especially when it comes to chiropractic care. At Elite Chiropractic Rehab & Wellness, we’re here to simplify things and guide you through the process so you can get the effective treatment you need.

Let’s break down what you’re entitled to, what chiropractic services are covered, and how to find the right provider in your area.

What Chiropractic Services Does the ILWU-PMA Health Plan Cover?

The ILWU-PMA Welfare Plan includes chiropractic care as a medically necessary treatment, part of your overall health coverage.

Here’s what your chiropractic benefits typically cover:

  • Initial exam with a qualified chiropractor
  • Medically necessary adjustments and physical treatments for spine and joint issues
  • Rehabilitative services, including exercises and guidance
  • Acupuncture, when prescribed by your plan provider
  • Certain wellness-focused services to help you manage chronic pain or injury

These services aim to improve the health of your human musculoskeletal system without relying heavily on drugs.

What Is NOT Covered In The Under the ILWU‑PMA chiropractic benefits

While ILWU-PMA chiropractic benefits are generous, they come with specific restrictions. It’s important to understand what isn’t covered to avoid unexpected out-of-pocket costs or denied claims.

Out-of-Network Providers

Chiropractic care from any provider not in your PPO network (e.g., CHPC in California or FCHN in Oregon/Washington) is not covered:

  • Under the Coastwise Indemnity Plan (Choice‑Port PPO), 100% coverage applies only to in-network providers. Out-of-network care receives no benefits
  • For Kaiser enrollees in CA, only in-network chiropractors via the state-specific network are covered, no out-of-network coverage applies

 Non‑Medically Necessary or Maintenance Care

  • Visits or procedures deemed not medically necessary (mainly maintenance or wellness-only sessions) can be denied coverage. If your provider doesn’t obtain prior medical necessity certification through ICM, you may be responsible
  • Claims labeled as “non-covered services/non‑medical necessity” may require advance notice forms, and providers may require you to sign waivers to pay out-of-pocket.

Visits Beyond Plan Limits Without Approval

  • You’re allowed up to 40 visits per plan year (July 1–June 30). Any visits beyond this require approval from the Welfare Plan’s chiropractic consultant.
  • Any claims exceeding these limits may be denied without such approval.

Work‑Injury (Workers’ Comp)

  • Chiropractic treatment for work-related injuries covered by Workers’ Compensation or employer liability laws is not covered under the ILWU chiropractic benefit

Finding a Chiropractic Care Provider in Your Network

Your health plan connects you to a provider network that includes licensed, trusted chiropractic professionals. Elite Chiropractic Rehab & Wellness is an experienced CHPC-approved provider within this network.

To find a participating PPO group chiropractor:

  1. Visit the ILWU-PMA benefit plans portal.
  2. Confirm Provider ID and current eligibility information.
  3. Schedule an exam with a chiropractor like us to create your custom treatment plan.
